Lardarius Webb – Safety

The 32-year-old converted safety was a mainstay and a crucial part of the coveted Baltimore Ravens defense for nine years. Considered one of the best corners in the game from about 2010-14 Webb possessed great speed, ball skills and sure tackling ability which is not common for a defensive back. Unfortunately, time stops for no one. Injuries and just plain age forced Webb to make the transition from cornerback to safety in 2016 re-inventing himself in the process.

Luckily for Webb, having possibly the greatest safety of all time in Ed Reed as a teammate and mentor taught him a thing or two on and off the field. Last season Webb found himself in a role that involved him coming off the bench, but he still appeared in all 16 regular-season games. He compiled 37 tackles two sacks and had four defended four passes.

The nine-year vet can without a doubt still play the game but in a more cerebral way rather than relying on his speed and athleticism as he did early on. He is a very good tackler naturally, understands coverage and blitz schemes and can read a play before the ball is snapped. Webb is not the insane athlete or lockdown type of defensive back he once was, and most teams know that.

Webb’s greatest asset at this point will likely come in the form of a mentor and veteran presence in the locker room to help prepare, groom, and polish the new wave of talent entering the league.

Potential Landing Spot – Cleveland Browns

It really is no secret that the Cleveland Browns have been the worst team in professional football. I mean the whole 0-16 record last year kind of tells you something. But Cleveland made some big money moves and drafted some very high potential players this offseason and you can see clearly that they are full of talent. The thing is they are one of if not the youngest teams in the NFL without much former success for guidance.

A veteran presence in that locker room, particularly for their super talented but very young secondary, would do wonders in building some continuity and trust between the players. Webb has played with and been around first-ballot Hall of Famers most of his career, so he knows what the atmosphere of a winning locker room is supposed to look and feel like.
