The Washington Capitals have won the Stanley Cup. Winning the Cup is special, but T.J. Oshie showed us all how a moment like this goes beyond the game.

The game ended, the Washington Capitals cleared the bench and the world witnessed the Stanley Cup finally being raised by one of the NHL’s all-time great players in Alex Ovechkin. The moment alone made it worth watching every NHL game this season, even if you aren’t a Capitals fan.

Ovechkin and the city of Washington have been waiting a long time for this moment, 44 years to be exact. As great as Ovechkin’s skate with the Cup was, there was another celebration that hit every single person watching on a deeper level that is beyond sports.

T.J. Oshie showed us all what championship moments like this mean to these athletes, their families and fans around the world when he talked about winning the Cup in front of his father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

“This one will stick with him forever, you can guarantee that.”

There wasn’t a person on Earth who’s eyes didn’t well up watching Oshie speak about how much this moment means to him and his father.  It’s moments like these that remind us how real these players are.

Oshie gave it his all in this Stanley Cup run. He scored eight goals and 13 assists through the Capitals 24-game playoff run. He also had one very proud Stanley Cup-winning father:

Sometimes we get moments in sports that are more important than victories or defeats. This is one of those moments. Congratulations to T.J. Oshie, his father and the Washington Capitals on a Stanley Cup they will never forget.
