1. Michael Fulmer

The Tigers certainly have grand designs of securing a haul for their 25-year-old pitcher, but it’s very possible the market they envision isn’t going to emerge. If it doesn’t, Detroit could do a lot worse than dealing Fulmer for Drury.

The Tigers have gotten almost nothing out of their second base spot this season. Dixon Machado is only hitting .207 and he’s providing the team almost zero power. Drury would be an immediate upgrade over him in the lineup.

The rationale for this deal from the Yankees perspective is obvious. Even if Fulmer isn’t quite as good as everyone thought previously, adding a 25-year-old starter to the rotation would be quite a coup for Cashman. Add in the fact that he’s still got multiple seasons of arbitration control left and it’s a massive win for the Yankees.

How much of a win depends on just how good Fulmer can be. He’s got really good stuff but he’s sporting the highest ERA of his career at 4.40 this season. That could be a blip based on small sample size, but it could also be a downward trend.

The simple truth is it’s worth the risk for the Yankees. If they can turn Brandon Drury into a pitcher who profiles as a middle of the rotation starter it’s a move they have to make. This represents the best case scenario for the Yankees and Drury.
