2. New York Yankees

The Yankees have hopped back over the Boston Red Sox to take over first place in the AL East, but the division title will be up for grabs until the final days of the season. The bitter rivals will be locked in a back-and-forth slugfest all year. Neither team should be terribly worried about the possibility of getting into the Wild Card with Luis Severino heading the New York rotation and Chris Sale leading Boston, but it is still preferable to coast right into the ALDS at full strength.

The Yankees have the far superior pool of prospects and young talent with which to make a trade with the crosstown Mets and have already been linked to Jacob deGrom when whispers first began that he would be available. They also have to be in the mix for Noah Syndergaard, who is much younger and has not had as many serious elbow issues.

As young as the Yankees are as a team, they should still be in win-now mode before Giancarlo Stanton’s massive contract begins to feel too cumbersome. The Mets could have their pick between Miguel Andujar, Justus Sheffield, Domingo German, Chance Adams or Clint Frazier and feel comfortable with their return. Gleyber Torres should be the only Yankees rookie who is untouchable.

Of the teams that could emerge as potential landing spots for Syndergaard, the Yankees have a clear need in the starting rotation, an incentive to win now and the young trade chips to get the job done. With a massive free-agent class set to hit the market this winter, Brian Cashman can make his team an even more attractive destination for Manny Machado or Bryce Harper by getting Syndergaard into the mix.
