Tampa Bay Rays

Tyson Ross, SP

The Rays looked like they might have a chance at the Wild Card this year. However, it hasn’t been put together this year at their playoff odds are just below 1% right now. No matter all of this, the Rays have been one of the more intriguing teams to watch this year. It is because of their unique usage of pitchers.

They had Sergio Romo, a reliever, start back-to-back games, going about 1 inning in each performance, thinking he could get the big hitters at the top of the order out. They are having bullpen games where the entire game is pitched by relievers. It is an interesting situation to monitor.

That being said, they could still benefit from looking at getting some other starting pitchers, especially if they trade Chris Archer. So far this year, Tyson Ross is having a solid year for the struggling Padres who may look to get something in return for him before he hits free agency. He has a very solid 3.31 ERA in 12 starts, and is doing it with decreased velocity. The velocity on all of his pitches has dropped, and continues to drop as we go through the season. However, he has drastically increased his horizontal movement, helping him to still eliminate hitters.

The Rays should bring in Ross and see if they think he can sustain this. If so, they could try to retain him for next season as he will hopefully be able to stay healthy.
