The World Cup is underway, but not before Robbie Williams decided to flip everyone off.

If you didn’t know the World Cup starts today, you probably live in America. With the USMNT failing to qualify for the tournament, American interest took a hit.

Similarly, if you forgot about Robbie Williams (or didn’t know who he was) you can’t be blamed. However, we were all reminded of him on Thursday when he decided to flip off cameras filming his opening ceremony performance ahead of the first World Cup game.

Before anyone trolls Williams, it needs to be appreciated that he’s apparently still enough of a thing to be featured at the World Cup opener.

Robbie Williams Crash Course Time: He was a pop star in the 90s who managed to produce a few hits that charted in America. You may not know who he is but there’s a decent chance you’ve heard at least one of his two biggest hits.

There’s ‘Millenium’, which I heard on heavy rotation at strip malls in suburban Minnesota in the early 2000s:

And then there’s ‘Kids’, which he produced with Kylie Minogue:

Neither of those songs is considered generationally significant, but both have been background music for at least one or two of your trips to Bed, Bath, And Beyond in your lifetime.

That being said, he’s still a big deal in Britain, and by extension Western Europe. The better question is who was that middle finger intended for? Was it aimed at Putin, at Donald Trump, at the world?

Either way, Robbie Williams has given the world another hit that we’re all talking about, so we can at least take solace in that.
