NBA Draft 2018: 5 targets for the Washington Wizards
1. Robert Williams III, Big, Texas A&M
We need context before fully diving into the various needs the Wizards must address this summer, and that starts with the team’s cap situation.
Bloated because of John Wall’s massive contract, Washington’s cap sheet looks terrifying at first glance. But the real story of their finances moving forward is that the Wizards are an old team that will look a lot different in two seasons. Over $7 million is coming off the books this summer, followed by up to $50 million the following summer. There will be plenty of opportunity to rehaul this perennially underperforming roster the next two years.
That’s what quietly makes the frontcourt a position of need for the Wizards. Look now, and you’ll see two very familiar names at the starting spots — Marcin Gortat and Markieff Morris. But Gortat has already spoken about the possibility of retiring at the end of his current contract, as well as an interest in returning to Orlando, where he began his career. Morris never chose Washington, having been traded to this team in 2016. He could move on, especially if he expects a significant raise from the bargain contract he signed with Phoenix in 2014.
All of these pieces could solidify with the Wizards drafting a big man at the No. 15 spot in this year’s draft. Williams has been compared with Rockets center Clint Capela throughout the draft process, and would bring a dose of badly needed athleticism to the stale, veteran frontcourt in Washington.
Williams also brings a feel for the game uncommon for players like him. This isn’t your typical raw, athletic project — Williams can pass and rebound already, having spent two years under Billy Kennedy at Texas A&M.
He would give Washington a pick-and-roll partner they’ve never been able to provide for Wall.
