. G. Kansas. Quentin Grimes. 10. player. 66

At first glance, it makes sense that Grimes would have found a partnership with Bill Self in Kansas’ program. Over time, we have seen success when prospects with prolific talent are roped in by Self and his offensive system. From Ben McLemore to Andrew Wiggins to Josh Jackson, supremely talented athletes who need to be checked find what they’re looking for in Lawrence.

But look at those names again and think on this. Self said in a press conference introducing Grimes on Tuesday, “[Grimes is] probably as complete a guard as we’ve ever had.” Coach and player recently spent part of the summer together while Self ran Team USA at the FIBA Americas tournament, after which Grimes was named MVP for a gold-medal performance with the American squad.

More from Self: “As good as he is, he’s competitive enough that I think he could really be special. … I think (Grimes) is a point guard that can play without the ball in his hands.”

With Udoka Azubuike back in tow, along with LaGerald Vick, Marcus Garrett and Mitch Lightfoot, the Jayhawk squad that made a Final Four just two months ago now looks in prime position to be knocking on the door of another come next March.

Grimes might be the reason, and the biggest winner if that happens.
