4. Canucks Select Jett Woo

Unfortunately, defenseman Jett Woo was not drafted by the Winnipeg Jets. That would have been perfect. But still, it’s very exciting to see a draft pick of Chinese descent go so high. The Vancouver Canucks selected Woo with the 37th overall pick.

This makes him the second-highest draft pick ever of Chinese descent, trailing only Josh Ho-Sang of the New York Islanders (28th overall in 2014).

Woo was born and raised in Winnipeg, but his grandparents on his father’s side are from China. To make things even more interesting, his mother is of German descent. The globalization of hockey is so exciting to watch.

Finally, the rest of the world is catching on to why we love hockey so much. Players who wouldn’t have gotten a chance to play in a different time are now getting drafted.

It’s also exciting because Vancouver has a prominent Asian culture and it’s one of the most diverse cities in Canada. Woo has found himself in a great situation where he should be able to fit in and have success.

The Canucks need help defensively, so he’ll be in a good position to contribute in the future. Hockey is quickly growing around the world and Woo has found himself in a perfect situation.
