Denver Nuggets — Luc Mbah a Moute

The Nuggets are in a tough financial spot this summer. Nikola Jokic’s extension makes them a luxury, making it hard for them to keep a useful player in Will Barton, unless ownership decides it wants to go into the luxury tax right now, or they can unload some salary. As Denver looks down its roster and looks to fill it out, it may need to do some inexpensively.

Luc Mbah a Moute signed with Houston for the minimum last year and it’s unclear if he’ll be seeking out more lucrative offers this time around. But for what Denver needs, he’d be a perfect fit. Forward is a weak spot on this roster. Michael Porter Jr. has all the potential in the world, but he’s not there yet and might take a redshirt year. Wilson Chandler is solid, but he’s coming off of a down year. Mbah a Moute is not a long term solution — the Nuggets have to be hoping that Porter is ready in a year or two to start at that spot —  but he helps Denver win now and goes valuable things. He defends, can drive effectively from the corner and hits 3s at at good enough clip. He could immediately step in and be an effective bridge-year starter for the Nuggets.

This same logic applies to Denver’s needs at backup point guard and backup wing as well.
