7 things we learned from Yankees-Red Sox series
2. Chris Sale is a true ace
In fairness, this really isn’t a groundbreaking conclusion. Sale has been an excellent pitcher for a while now. Still, his ability to walk into Game 2 at Yankee Stadium and throw a one-hitter was very impressive.
On the season, Sale has definitely been Boston’s ace. His ERA of 2.41 in 18 starts has been the foundation of the Red Sox rotation. Truthfully, he deserves better than his relatively modest 8-4 record this season.
The good news here for Boston fans is that they can count on Sale to come up big anytime, anywhere. The pressure of pitching against the Yankees in June is different than October, but he’s got the stuff to shut down any offense in the playoffs. The trick for the Red Sox isn’t trying to find an ace, it’s trying to find a second one to throw behind Sale.
The real question is when Boston will get serious about trying to tie down Sale for the long haul. As his contract currently stands, he will be an unrestricted free agent after next season. Don’t look for the talented lefty to ever hit the open market. At the latest, the Red Sox will offer Sale a new deal this summer. Don’t be shocked if a new deal gets done before then.
