1. Luis Severino is a Cy Young candidate

Severino had already proven his status as an ace prior to the weekend. His dominant effort against the Red Sox in the deciding game of the series catapults him squarely into the Cy Young conversation.

The frightening thing about his outing on Sunday is that he didn’t appear to have his best stuff. His slider is usually his best pitch, but he didn’t trust it at all. Instead, he got the majority of his outs via his electric fastball and rapidly improving changeup.

Even without his best pitch, he still managed to go out there and put up 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball for his club. That dropped his ERA to a dazzling 1.98 on the season. If his performance stays anywhere near that level during the second half, he’s got an excellent chance of winning his first Cy Young.

Next: Grading the Yankees rotation: Severino dominates, but what about the rest?

Of course, the true measure of greatness in a Yankee uniform is determined by playoff success. Severino won’t have a chance to quiet those doubts until October arrives. However, if this season’s performance is any indication, expect him to be up to the challenge.
