2. Michael Fulmer

At this point in the list, the potential price for acquiring the player jumps significantly. At 25 years of age, Fulmer is someone who can be a part of the Yankees rotation for years to come. The Tigers are keenly aware of that. They will ask for much more than one middling asset in return for their talented righty.

Unfortunately for Detroit, Fulmer is having a bit of a down season. He’s just 3-7 with a 4.22 ERA on the current campaign. Expect the Yankees to bring his current statistic up repeatedly when they’re negotiating with the Tigers front office.

Don’t expect Detroit to offer any discount. Fulmer still has multiple years of team control left and he posted a sub-4.00 ERA during both of his first two seasons in the majors. They will claim this year’s moderate dip in performance is just a blip on Fulmer’s radar. They are probably right.

As such, the Yankees would need to part with multiple, meaningful assets to complete this deal. Cashman might prefer to do a deal like this if he feels Fulmer can anchor his rotation for the future. If the price for rental pitchers is too high, the Yankees won’t be afraid to investigate a more expensive deal than can better position the team to compete both now, and in the future.

The real question here is whether or not Detroit are willing to move Fulmer. If they are, the Yankees have the prospect depth to offer them a fair return. If the Tigers believe Fulmer is part of their long-term future, they will scare New York off with an outrageous asking price. No matter what, expect the two teams to have serious conversations before the deadline.
