Here are the best bets for the Yankees at this year’s trade deadline
1. Blake Snell
Think of Snell as an even better version of Fulmer. He’s one year younger than the Tigers ace and he’s already proven his ability to thrive in the AL East. Predictably, Tampa Bay feel like they’re in a position to demand a ton for their talented lefty.
Unlike Fulmer, Snell is enjoying the best season of his young career. He’s 11-4 with an ERA of just 2.24 on the season to date. He’s the kind of arm that could help Luis Severino anchor the Yankees’ playoff rotation. The fact that he also has multiple years of team control left will only make him a more attractive asset for the Yankees.
Unfortunately for Yankee fans, Snell is the player on this list who is the least likely to join the team. Tampa Bay don’t want to deal him. If they do decide to move him ahead of the deadline, they’d certainly prefer to move him outside the division. The Yankees are probably the last team on Earth that Rays officials would like to deal with on Snell.
That doesn’t mean a move is impossible though. If the Rays do decide to move Snell, their front office will be charged with getting the biggest return possible. The Yankees have the combination of young, major league ready talent and prospects required to outbid the competition.
Next: Grading the Yankees rotation: Severino dominates, but what about the rest?
In the end, Snell is likely to stay put unless Tampa Bay receives a Godfather offer for him. Cashman isn’t likely to make such a seismic move at the deadline. Look for conversations between the two teams on Snell to pick up in the summer.
