It’s time for the Mets to start selling off assets for the rebuild

1. Jacob deGrom

Unlike Syndergaard, deGrom isn’t the right age to still be at the top of his game when the Mets are ready to contend again. At 30 years of age, deGrom should be moved to a contender for a high price this month.

DeGrom is currently, conservatively, one of the top 10 starting pitchers in baseball. Unfortunately for him, he’s toiling away for a team that has zero chance of reaching the postseason. In a weird way, the Mets owe it to deGrom to at least listen to offers for him.

The reality is their front office should be out there trying to spark a bidding war. DeGrom has the ability to turn a pennant race on its head. He can’t do that for the Mets. He literally could catapult as many as 10 other teams into the playoffs.

Again, the Mets shouldn’t be letting deGrom go for free. There will still be a robust market for his services this summer if they elect to wait. Instead, they should communicate his price to the rest of the teams in the league and then they should sit back and wait to see if anyone is willing to meet in.

Like with Syndergaard, they should be looking for one player ready to make an immediate impact along with several other really good prospects. If the Mets are anything near reasonable with their asking price, Jacob deGrom should be on the move this month.
