4. Philadelphia Phillies

A six-game winning streak has vaulted the Phillies back into first place, and they are here to stay in the NL playoff race for 2018. Philadelphia would also hold a small lead in the Wild Card race were they to cede the division lead back to the Braves. Both teams have surprisingly accelerated the timetable on their rebuilding schedule and should be looking to push it into even higher gear at the deadline.

With a huge pile of cash socked away from the rebuild, the Phillies will be a huge player in free agency this winter. That won’t fully rule them out from giving up prospects this year. Manny Machado will be a target for the Phillies after the season, but he is also a target right now.

The Phillies benefit from acquiring Machado now on multiple fronts. For starters, he is a huge upgrade for an offense that has been inconsistent most of the year. Shortstop prospect J.P. Crawford has battled injuries and has spent most of the year on the disabled list. Another top prospect, Scott Kingery, has been inconsistent with the stick and is not a long-term option at shortstop. Kingery’s future is at second or third.

The Orioles will be looking to bring back top Phillies pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez if a trade is going to come between the teams. Sanchez is a steep price to pay, but introducing Machado to the clubhouse for this year’s pennant push could be enough to convince him Philadelphia is the best place to spend the rest of his prime.
