Baltimore Orioles – Manny Machado, Shortstop/Third Base

Odds are if you clicked on this article to read, you already knew who would be the choice from the Orioles. There’s been rumors swirling for a while now that Machado is on the trade block and that makes all the sense in the world. Baltimore is 24-59 as of this writing and they’re neck and neck with the Kansas City Royals for the worst record in baseball. They really aren’t close to being a competitive squad, especially in the American League East. It’s no accident that Machado is due to be a free agent after this season because there is no motivation for him to sign long-term in Baltimore if he wants to win.

Now, the biggest question is if the Orioles would trade him to their division rival even in the middle of a lost season. I would lean no, just out of stubbornness from general manage Dan Duquette. Even if he gets traded to another team this season, he will be able to choose where he wants to play after the season. Heading to New York to don the pinstripes has to be a very attractive option.  The question would then become where does Machado play? The smart money would be that New York would try and deal current shortstop Didi Gregorius. They could leave Miguel Andujar at third base and Machado has made known that he wants to play shortstop. If Gregorius is the only thing standing in the way of bringing in Machado, the Yankees will thank Gregorius for his hard work and send him on his way. Much like the the potential combo of putting Freeman in an already stacked lineup, having Judge, Machado and Stanton as your 2-3-4 hitters would be positively lethal. Machado might not be a matter of “if” but “when” he’s a Yankee.
