1. How worried should we be about the future of Tyler Seguin?

The most important question right now is what happens with stud Tyler Seguin. To this juncture in the offseason he has not been extended beyond the coming year, meaning he’d be one of the hottest commodities on the open market in 2019.

There’s a good chance he does in fact stay in Dallas for the long-term, possibly with another contract signed before this summer is over. It isn’t often a superstar of his caliber simply walks, though of course there are exceptions (John Tavares). He’s also stated repeatedly his love for the Stars and that Texas is his home. Then again, Tavares made the same sentiments and New York Islanders fans are currently burning his jersey.

But what if he doesn’t sign over the summer? What if nothing gets done between now and April?

Well, the Stars are certainly playing with fire if they go that route. Really, they’d have to at least get to the playoffs and endure a deep run to even make the decision for Seguin somewhat difficult. They’ve only made the postseason twice since he was traded to Dallas in 2013. They can’t have another season like 2016-17 or the gut-punch of this past March.

Even if Dallas made the postseason, there are no guarantees that Seguin will stick around. We all know and understand the market for a player in his mid-twenties who can score 40 goals and put up 80 to 90 points. The wolves would be at the door and we can’t say that Dallas sits as the best option to win another title, at least not at the moment.

Let’s hope that the Stars and Nill get this over with quickly. We’d rather not be wondering come next July if he’ll stay or leave. It was painful enough to watch a player do that to a team I don’t even root for.
