4 reasons Yankees trade for JA Happ won’t be their last move
3. The Red Sox are elite
It’s not as if the Yankees are making moves to expand on their division lead. The unfortunate reality is they currently sit 5.5 games behind the Red Sox. Cashman’s job is to help close the gap, that may require more than just adding Britton and Happ.
There’s no good reason to expect Boston’s performance to fall off either. Adding Eovaldi this week also addresses their biggest weakness. Removing Drew Pomeranz from the starting rotation should only boost Alex Cora’s team down the stretch.
The need to overcome such a significant gap in a relatively short period of time means the Yankees have to become appreciably better than their arch rivals. It’s unlikely that New York has made the moves to accomplish that goal yet.
If, however, Cashman can manage to make a really big acquisition before the deadline that could change. The Yankees have a lot of talent and the difference between their roster and the Red Sox isn’t that significant. Cashman isn’t going to rest until he exhausts every opportunity to swing a game changing transaction. Again, it may not happen, but Cashman won’t stop until he’s done everything he can to overcome the Red Sox.
