3. San Francisco Giants

The Giants currently sit 5.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. Unfortunately, they also happen to sit in fourth place. That’s not the profile of a team that should sit still at the trade deadline.

The Giants needed to pick one direction or another. Committing to a full-blown rebuild might have been painful in the short-term, but it was probably the team’s best strategy in the long run. Putting an ace pitcher like Madison Bumgarner on the block this summer could have netted the Giants a massive return. Various reports claim San Francisco’s front office was unwilling to entertain any deals for their star southpaw.

Even if the Giants couldn’t stomach a full rebuild, they should have moved someone. Numerous teams had interest in taking Andrew McCutchen off their hands but the deadline passed without any deal being struck.

The Giants would even have been better served to head in the other direction. There were absolutely players available who could’ve given them some hope of making a run down the stretch. Instead, they sat back and watched the Dodgers make all of the big moves. It had to be a disappointing July for baseball fans in the Bay Area.
