With another season upon us, here’s a look at the top five storylines from Europe’s major club competitions.

The European club season is upon us. The first two of the big five leagues to start their seasons, the Premier League and Ligue 1, on Friday. After a truncated summer preseason schedule, a result of the World Cup in Russia, a great season awaits.

While we expect some of the same teams to dominate again this season (does anyone think Juvenuts and Bayern Munich aren’t favorites to again win the league title in Serie A and Bundesliga?), there are plenty of unanswered questions as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo will grab much of the attention in Italy. His presence in Serie A is sure to shine a spotlight on the league. At the same time, Ronaldo’s former club, Real Madrid, look weaker than Barcelona (at least on paper) in the race for La Liga.

While clubs fight for supremacy in their respective leagues, the real prize for the big clubs remains the Champions League. After Real’s three straight titles, there are many clubs who have spent lots of money in recent years, such as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are looking to win it. Others, like Juve and Bayern, are also in the mix after falling short in recent years.

With that, here’s a look at five storylines to follow as the games that really count finally start this month.
