Fantasy Baseball 2018: Tyler Glasnow looking good with Rays
By Bill Pivetz
Tyler Glasnow has impressed so far since joining the Rays. If you need starting pitching help, he is worth adding to your team.
The Tampa Bay Rays made a few moves before the trade deadline. One of them was trading away ace Chris Archer to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In return, they got outfield prospect Austin Meadows and a minor league player. The third player part of that deal with pitcher Tyler Glasnow. Since joining the team, he’s been good and is worth joining your fantasy baseball team.
Glasnow was a highly touted prospect but never lived up to the hype in Pittsburgh. He posted a 5.79 ERA, 1.705 WHIP and a 3-11 record in 56 games. The Pirates were okay moving on from the 24-year-old. A change of scenery seems to have worked so far for Glasnow.
In his three starts with the Rays, Glasnow has a 2.25 ERA, 0.750 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB. The negative is that he hasn’t pitched deep into games. He has just 12 innings pitched in his three starts. However, Glasnow’s usage has increased in each game.

His most recent start against the Toronto Blue Jays points to a bright future. He pitched five innings while allowing just one run on two hits and two walks and six strikeouts. Glasnow recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in his previous start.
Glasnow will make his next start against the Boston Red Sox. This may be a matchup you’d avoid if you were to pick up Glasnow. The Red Sox are the best team in baseball and have the lineup to prove it.
While the Rays may not be a top team, the offense can still put a crooked number on the scoreboard and give Glasnow the win. A quality start may be harder to come by, especially if he’s only going five innings per start.
Glasnow has been added in 14.9 percent of ESPN leagues over the last week. He’s still available in 80 percent of leagues.
As a spot starter in mixed leagues or a deep option on AL-only leagues, Glasnow is not a bad pick. The American League East may not be the best division to pitch in but he’s looked good so far. If you’re down in ERA, WHIP or strikeouts, he’s worth adding.
