Heisman Rankings 2018: Top 20 Heisman Trophy candidates

Only a three-star recruit when he played his high school ball back in Virginia, Trace McSorley has become a legend in Happy Valley, helping the Penn State Nittany Lions get back to the top of the college football landscape. McSorley has led the Nittany Lions to a Big  Ten title during his time as a starter, and every fan of the program has to be ecstatic that he decided to return for his senior season.

Penn State will be missing star running back Saquon Barkley this season, as the speedy back was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. That means McSorley will have to play an even bigger role in this offense, and when it comes to the 22-year old signal-caller,  he has no problems with the spotlight.

In the two biggest games of his college career, McSorley outplayed every other player on the field, taking home MVP honors in each. The first was the Big Ten Championship Game back in 2016, where he set the conference title game record for yards passing (384), and touchdowns (4). last season, he was named the MVP of the Fiesta Bowl, as he led the Nittany Lions to a victory over Washington.

At 6-foot-1, and only 205 pounds, McSorley certainly does not have the physical attributes you would expect from an elite quarterback. However, Baker Mayfield went first overall to the Cleveland Browns this past April, so it is anybody’s guess as to where McSorley will end up when the NFL Draft rolls around next April.

For now, McSorley will work on putting an exclamation point on his college career, where he has definitely left a lasting legacy at Penn State. He has an experienced receiver coming back in DeAndre Thompkins, so expect to hear that connection a ton this season coming from Beaver Stadium.
