WWE SummerSlam 2018: Preview and predictions

WWE Universal Championship Match
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns
Am I the only one going with Peter Cetera and “Well, here we are again” running through the brain? Just Google the reference, youngsters. But really, here we are again with Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns and a world title on the line. You guys remember the Universal Championship, right? It’s that tacky-looking red one that a UFC fighter has held for about 500 days and rarely gets defended. Okay, I’ll stop whining now.
To be honest with you, I’ve never had a problem with the matches between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. They’re physical and often really do have a real fight feel to them. But this was all supposed to end at WrestleMania 34 and then it didn’t. We moved on to Saudi Arabia with the cage match at Greatest Royal Rumble and the finish didn’t quite go as planned, even if that spear through the cage was pretty awesome. But they recovered nicely and the promos with Roman as the uncrowned champion actually made this whole thing better. Lashley got thrown into the mix for a minute and that clean win was actually quite shocking. Of course, it was inevitable that Roman was going to win the rematch to get into this spot and now we’re set to go one more time.
Prediction: There’s a lot that could happen here. There are reports that Lesnar is set to meet with WWE officials just a few hours before SummerSlam to discuss his contract and how he could possibly work in both WWE and UFC simultaneously. That’s a big gamble to take. If Brock wants to stay, do they keep the title on him knowing that he could possibly get taken out by Cormier in a few months? That’s not a good look. Or do they just have Roman FINALLY win this thing and let Brock go do his thing in UFC and bring him back later? There’s also the Money in the Bank briefcase to consider here. The plan for quite a while has been for Roman Reigns to finally conquer Brock Lesnar and take his place atop the WWE, right? So does he finally get the job done and then have it taken away immediately? So many options here.
Personally, as I said earlier, I really don’t want a cash-in at SummerSlam. Just go with the plan and have Reigns beat Lesnar in a physical match. There’s been too much time and energy invested in this story to just let it slide with another Lesnar win. Reigns and Strowman are going to fight for this title at some point, and maybe that is a way to kick that off, but just keep it simple for now. It won’t be the popular choice but Roman Reigns wins the Universal Championship. End show.
