Examining the 2022 International Boxing Hall of Fame class
Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs)
Like the previous two fighters, Marquez officially announced his retirement in 2017, but his last fight was back in 2014.
For better or for worse, Marquez’s career will always be linked to rival Manny Pacquiao after four brutal fights between them. For years, Marquez felt he was done an injustice by the judges in the first three Pacquiao fights (all three were razor close). Leading up to their fourth fight, he promised he would not let the judges have a say, and he did just that, earning one of the most devastating knockouts in recent history. It will be in the conversation for fight of the decade, and it put an end to one of boxing’s best rivalries.
One of the best counter-punchers in the sport, Marquez put together a very impressive resume, earning wins over Manuel Medina, Orlando Salido, Joel Casamayor, Marco Antonio Barrera, Michael Katsidis, Juan Diaz (twice), and the previously mentioned iconic knockout over Manny Pacquiao.
Of his seven losses, two were early in his career, and the other five were against quality opponents. He has two losses to Pacquiao, one to Floyd Mayweather, one to Timothy Bradley, and one to Chris John. Not bad guys to lose to.
Marquez is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, and hopefully he appears on the 2019 ballot since his last fight was in 2014.
