Boxing welterweight division rankings: Spence, Crawford top stacked weight class
4. Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs)
Danny gets a lot of hate from fans due to the fact that he has a history of “cherry picking.’ When you are considered among the best in your division, you should not be fighting guys like Rod Salka, Paulie Malignaggi, Robert Guerrero, Samuel Vargas and Brandon Rios all in a four-year stretch.
If he fought one or two of those guys (aside from Salka) in that span, then he would not be viewed as negatively as he is. And while some of those guys listed are relatively big names, they were all well past their primes when Danny fought them. No one fights elite opponents every single fight, but not many boxers take as long between elite opponents as Danny does.
Despite the negativity, Danny is a great fighter. He is an excellent counter-puncher, and his left hook is dangerous (see his fight with Amir Khan). He also has some very good wins over Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson. His only loss came via split decision to Keith Thurman, and while Thurman was the rightful winner, Danny had his moments and was competitive throughout.
Whenever Danny fights, I am reminded of the talent he has. Even if you are somone who hates on him (which seems to be a lot of fans), his skills are still legit. If he is able to beat Shawn Porter next month, he will be in prime position to face one of the top three guys in the division, any of which would be a big money fight.
