1. Can the passing game produce?

Cowboys fans love to claim that Dak Prescott is one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL. If that’s true, 2018 will be the season where he proves it on the field. The anonymous group of wide receivers he’s being given this year will force him to play at the higher level than ever before.

The loss of Bryant is getting most of the headlines this offseason, but it’s the retirement of Witten that’s really going to bother Prescott. When plays broke down in the past he always had the former Tennessee tight end in his sights. Neither Geoff Swaim or Dalton Schultz is going to forge that sort of connection with Prescott.

The options at wide receiver are pretty uninspiring as well. Garrett and company are putting a lot of trust into players like Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams and Tavon Austin. One of those guys is going to put up numbers by default, but the chances of all three producing adequate seasons in the passing game are pretty small.

Look for smart defenses to load the box against this offense and dare Prescott to beat them through the air. It stands to reason he’ll be forced to make more tough throws down the field than ever before. This season is going to tell us a lot about where Prescott stands as a quarterback. His season should be a good barometer of how far the Cowboys can go in 2018.
