Drew Carey – Seattle Sounders

When you think of Drew Carey and sports, Cleveland is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Born and raised in the northeast Ohio city, Carey is a fixture at Browns, Cavaliers and Indians games. He was even a guest of honor at the first game the new Cleveland Browns played at home since returning to the NFL in 1999. Carey is also a fan of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, so you may expect him to be partial to the Columbus Crew when it comes to MLS.

You may be surprised to learn that Carey’s MLS club of choice is located in the Pacific Northwest. Drew Carey is a minority owner of the Seattle Sounders. According to the Sounders’ official website, Carey’s relationship with the beautiful game began when he attended an LA Galaxy game in 2003, and blossomed into what it is today.

Unlike a lot of celebrity owners, Carey is involved with both the day-to-day operations as well as with the club’s supporters. In a 2016 Vice Sports documentary, Carey revealed that he walks with supporters to the stadium on matchdays, and sits close to the pitch instead of up in a luxury box reserved for an owner.

Carey’s legacy as an owner of the Sounders will likely be commemorated by a decision he made that connects the fans to upper managment of the club. He came up with the idea to allow the fans to vote on the general manager’s job every four years, directly connecting supporters to the inner workings of the club. Carey says he got the idea from teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona.
