3. Derek Holland, San Francisco Giants

The Giants have faded from the playoff race, so they should be open for business as August winds down. Holland is having a good season, with a 3.65 ERA, a 9.0 K/9 and a 3.3 BB/9 over 29 appearances (25 starts) thus far. And as a left-handed pitcher, he could very well be on the move before the end of business on Friday as contending teams look to fortify their pitching and mine the waiver wire.

It’s unclear if Holland has been placed on revocable waivers, but there’s some chance he has been as San Francisco acknowledges its fate this year.

In his seven starts since the All-Star break, Holland has allowed two runs or less six times. Over that span overall (38.2 innings), he has a 36:14 K/BB ratio, a 2.56 ERA and .228 batting average allowed.

Holland is pitching on a one-year, $1.75 million deal this year, so he would be a remarkably cheap acquisition for any pitching-hungry playoff contender. The A’s should have him on their radar based on both of those criteria, perhaps prior to Manaea and Anderson going down and almost surely in the days since.
