1. Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals

The Nationals have given up on the 2018 season, and Gonzalez is part of the most recent wave of players to clear waivers this month. According to Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com, the left-hander is drawing some trade interest.

Gonzalez has been up-and-down this year, with a 4.35 ERA over 26 starts (140.2 innings). He has also had a slight drop in strikeout rate (7.7 K/9) and an uptick in walks (4.3 BB/9 as causes for concern. Any appeal he had as a trade target before the July 31 deadline has definitely faded now, with a 8.84 ERA over his first four August starts, but he is coming off a well-timed strong outing against the New York Mets last Friday night (one run allowed over seven innings).

Gonzalez’s start Wednesday night against the Phillies should be fairly well-attended by scouts from contending teams, with essentially 48 hours to work out a deal with Washington. Oakland may already be trying to work a deal for him, but having eyes on him in Philadelphia would be a smart move. If he pitches well again Wednesday night, Gonzalez may be on the way back to where he started his career in short order.
