4. Ohio State Buckeyes

Rank: 5 | Opponent: Oregon State | Date: Saturday, Sept. 1 (Noon ET)

Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way: the Oregon State Beavers are not a great football team.  They won a single game last season and, well, beating Portland State isn’t something that you want to write home about in any regard. While it’s hard for the Beavers to go anywhere but up from where they were last year, it’s hard to expect them to suddenly start competing with the best teams in the country. However, this is a different situation.

There’s no need to re-hash all of the drama that has surrounded the Ohio State Buckeyes entering the 2018 college football season. What needs to be said, however, is that having head coach Urban Meyer suspended for this game and for two more thereafter is something that can’t be ignored. In the same vein, you also can’t ignore the fact that, with all that has been going on in regards to the coaching staff and the program, the potential for this team to be distracted would not be a shock at all.

Based on the talent that they are going to put on the field, Ohio State should absolutely roll over Oregon State on Saturday afternoon to open their season. In fact, that’s honestly what you should expect to happen, because sometimes talent is enough to get a win even if everything about the program is in disarray. Having said that, it wouldn’t be the craziest thing in the world for the Buckeyes, with all that they’re currently dealing with, to come out showing the effects of what’s been going on off the field and suffer a huge upset loss.
