These 5 MLB waiver trades will shape the postseason chase
Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been busy the past few weeks, trading for J.A. Happ, Zach Britton and Lance Lynn. Andrew McCutchen, however, is the biggest addition to the team. McCutchen, the 2013 NL MVP, hit .255 with 15 home runs and 55 RBI for the San Francisco Giants this season after being acquired from Pittsburgh in the offseason. He was traded to New York on Thursday in exchange for two minor league prospects.
The move to add McCutchen is an important one for the Yankees because of who is missing from their lineup. Aaron Judge went on the DL with a broken bone in his wrist more than a month ago, and the team is still unsure of when he will return. With Judge out, the Yankees have been forced to play Giancarlo Stanton in the outfield more frequently than they would like. The addition of McCutchen’s veteran bat allows the Yankees to give Stanton more off days and games as the DH. The Yankees have understandably struggled to fill the massive hole in right left by Judge’s injury. Since he went down, their right fielders rank last in the majors in batting average and 29th in on-base percentage. McCutchen fills that gap; he has played all but one game in right for the Giants this season.
The 31-year-old McCutchen has a .288 AVG with 218 home runs in his 10-year career, mostly spent with Pittsburgh.
