Holes 11, 12 and 13

Hole 11: Par 4 – Erin Hills #X

Again, take your pick. They’re all great options. As long as it offers you the opportunity to wade through thigh-high fescue, it justifies its place on the Signature Course. What an experience, trying to dig a golf ball out of the tall stuff. Call it fescue, call it heather, call it the deep rough, it doesn’t matter, playing out of it would be miserable. But misery loves company, and in this case, you’d get to be miserable in the company of the biggest names in golf.

Hole 12: Par 5 – Waialae Country Club #9

You were forced to lay up out of the fescue on the 11th, and now you’ll get leid up in Honolulu at the 12th. Waialae hosts the Sony Open, one of the first events of the calendar year. Those of us watching the January tournament from the frozen tundra of the mainland can’t get enough of the course’s tropical beauty. At only 506 yards, the 9th at Waialae (the 18th for members) offers a great opportunity to put a circle on the scorecard. There’s danger on both sides, but if you find the fairway, you can get up in two. If you’re a pro in the fairway, you could be hitting a short iron to the green.

Hole 13: Par 3 – Royal Troon #8

You’ve made your birdie, donned your Hawaiian shirt and ordered an exotic coconut based cocktail. Life is good after the 12th. But the Signature Course wouldn’t be worth playing if it let you get comfortable. You just can’t mail it in. The expression is particularly appropriate on Royal Troon’s iconic par 3, the Postage Stamp. British Open winds make the 120-yard shot difficult to gauge, and the bunkers on either side of the raised green suck up any shot that’s less than perfect. Take a look at this video to see the best players in golf trying to get out of the sand only to have the Postage Stamp return to sender.
