Cowboys at Panthers stream, odds, pick and prediction
The Panthers are the smart play
One important thing we haven’t talked about yet is all of the injuries each team has along the offensive line. The Cowboys will really miss Travis Frederick at center. Not having him out there is going to really inhibit Dallas’ ability to run the football against this stout Panthers defense.
Carolina has their own issues on the offensive line though. Matt Kalil isn’t a great left tackle, but the decision to put him on IR will put second-year Taylor Moton under a microscope. Look for the Cowboys to try to take advantage of his inexperience.
The bet here comes down to whether or not you believe Dallas’ motley group of wide receivers can give their offense some balance. To put it very simply, we’re very skeptical of their ability to do so. When you’re counting on Tavon Austin to be a really productive part of your offense, it’s a really bad sign about your talent level.
The Cowboys may figure out how to produce a sufficient passing attack later in the season, but it’s not going to be there Week 1. That’s why you should take the Panthers and give up the three points here. Trust in Newton more than the national media. He’s not a perfect player, but he’s a dynamic weapon for this offense. That should be enough to push his team over the top.
This isn’t the sort of game you should bet your mortgage on, but it’s a decent value proposition. Go with Carolina and avoid the over/under entirely.
