College football Week 2: 1 biggest takeaway for every Top 25 team
6. Oklahoma – Kyler Murray put on a show with 306 yards and three touchdowns through the air and did some nice things with his feet, finishing with 69 rushing yards and a pair of scores. No Baker Mayfield, but this offense continues to hum as Lincoln Riley might be the best offensive mind in the game. As great as Murray was, the biggest takeaway is how well the defense has looked, and even bigger is the knee injury to running back Rodney Anderson. If he’s out for an extended amount of time, the margin for error is that much slimmer for Murray as the Sooners try to navigate their Big 12 schedule.
7. Auburn – A 63-9 win over Alabama State isn’t going to reveal much about this Auburn team that we didn’t already know after their Week 1 win vs. Washington. After rushing for 429 yards, and limiting Alabama State to 47 rushing yards is that Auburn’s lines dominated an FCS opponent. We already know Auburn can run the ball and has a destructive defensive line. The biggest takeaway is not to take too much away from this game. Next week vs. LSU will be another huge test for Auburn and that game we can put a lot of stock in the performance.
8. Notre Dame – A big comedown for the Irish after their Week 1 vs. Michigan as Brandon Wimbush and company looked sloppy in the 24-16 win over Ball State. Wimbush threw three interceptions, which is highly concerning after an impressive opener. Notre Dame will go as far as he takes them, but three picks vs. Ball State suggests he still has a lot to work on.
9. Washington – Playing North Dakota is just a bit different from playing Auburn in Atlanta, but a win is a win is a win, and Washington really needed one. Not only did the Huskies lose to Auburn in their opener, they lost All-American tackle Trey Adams for the season earlier this week with a back injury that kept him out of the opener. I have serious long-term concerns about the offense without Adams protecting Jake Browning, but tonight, they get in the win column as they prepare to enter Pac-12 play. Browning wasn’t particularly great with two picks to three touchdowns and 313 yards, but the team threw for 437 yards in the romp.
10. Stanford – No need to panic over Bryce Love any longer after he was quiet in Week 1, the Heisman runner-up from a year ago ran for 136 yards and a score to pace the Cardinal offense in the win vs. USC. David Shaw has a complete team, as usual, as the offense, defense and special teams were on point against the Trojans.
