11. LSU – After eight quarters, LSU might have the best defense so far this season. After drubbing Miami in the opener, LSU had a bit of a breather, hosting Southeastern Louisiana, who they blanked, and held to 3-18 on third down. I still need to see more from Ohio State transfer quarterback, Joe Burrow, to think LSU can challenge in the SEC West, but he went 10-of-20 for 151 yards and two scores and ran for a score too. Solid, but nothing spectacular.

12. Virginia Tech – Not a whole lot to glean from whipping on William & Mary, but Josh Jackson and Damon Hazelton (four catches, 104 yards and a touchdown) look like they could be a deadly combo in the ACC this year.

13. Penn State – James Franklin’s Nittany Lions needed overtime to beat Appalachian State last week, but after a slow start in the first quarter, destroyed rival Pitt and look like they’re ready for the Big Ten gauntlet that awaits. Trace McSorley wasn’t particularly sharp on 14-of-30 passing, but Miles Sanders ran for 118 yards on 16 carries as he looks good as Saquon Barkley’s successor. Most impressive was the Penn State pass defense that held Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett to only 55 yards.

14. West Virginia – Will Grier had one more incompletion than he had touchdowns in the 52-17 romp over Youngstown State. The Heisman candidate threw four touchdowns on 21-of-26 passing and had 332 yards. Oddly enough, his favorite target, David Sills V, was limited to two catches for 33 yards but Marcus Simms had eight receptions for 119 yards and Gary Jennings Jr. had six receptions for 97 yards, including three touchdowns. Look for Grier and his receivers to continue to put up gaudy numbers all season.

15. Michigan State The Spartans allowed 13 unanswered points to Arizona State in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning field goal as time expired. This was a total collapse as Mark Dantonio was outcoached by Herm Edwards in crunch time. Michigan State is a late touchdown vs. Utah State from starting off 0-2. They will likely fall out of the Top 25 this week.
