Trash talk brewed before the game in Lexington against Kentucky, but Mississippi State wasn’t prepared for the Wildcats to back it up like they did. The Bulldogs were stymied, held to just seven points in a 28-7 loss against Kentucky as their SEC foe continues to rack up the wins and shock just about everyone. Nick Fitzgerald had a rough game, and Joe Moorhead’s team needs to get back to the drawing board.

It’s the question everyone will be asking around the water cooler on Monday: is Texas back? There may not be a definitive answer to this question any time soon because every time the Longhorns look like they may be “back,” they take a step in the wrong direction. This time around, they’ve won two straight games against ranked foes, beating USC handily last week and TCU by two scores this week. Maybe the Longhorns aren’t to be messed with, after all.

Pretty isn’t the word that’s usually used to described Michigan State wins, but the Spartans always seem to find ways to get the job done. Mark Dantonio and Co. went into hostile territory on Saturday night and escaped Bloomington with a win over the Indiana Hoosiers, 35-21. Brian Lewerke and the offense looked shaky while the defensive line was strong and freshman wideout Jalen Nailor saved the day with two big scores.

Benny Snell and the Wildcats talked the trash and then backed it up with another huge win in SEC play. Just a couple of weeks after recording their first win in Gainesville in decades, they took down a ranked foe in Lexington to improve to 4-0 on the season, and the chances they find themselves in the AP Top 25 this week are somewhere around 100 percent. Kentucky looks strong so far and will get some serious love from AP voters.

Butch Davis came back to town, but this time he was coaching FIU, looking for an upset of his former program. The Panthers weren’t putting up much of a fight through the better part of four quarters, but they scored two late touchdowns to make the Hurricanes sweat out what seemed like a breeze of a victory. N’Kosi Perry took over at quarterback and looked great while Travis Homer broke the 100-yard mark — finally.
