1. Season 2

One episode simply stands in its own hemisphere in terms of one of the funniest dark humor twists in sitcom history. Modern Family’s season 2 episode 12, “Our Children, Ourselves” featuring 24′s own Chloe O’Brian, Mary Lynn Rajskub, has the perfect setup. Mitch and Cam randomly run into Mitch’s one-time ex-girlfriend Tracy, the only woman Mitch has ever slept with in his life. After a mild chat Mitch notices as Tracy is walking away that she’s walking with what appears to be a red headed child, Mitch starts wondering the rest of the episode if the supposed child is his. He tells Cam how after they slept together back at prom, he never answered Tracy’s calls and she might have been calling him about a pregnancy.

Mitchell and Cam end up going to Tracy’s with a “Little Slugger” baseball glove wrapped as a present preemptively. It turns out that the man wasn’t a child at all (surprise!) it just appeared that way because of his height, and not only that, he’s actually Tracy’s husband! Everything goes south from this moment on when he unwraps the “Little Slugger” baseball glove from Mitchell, giving one of the most comedic silent pauses ever on Modern Family.

Not content with just having one 10 out of 10 storyline, Modern Family had another goldmine in Jay and Gloria’s dinner. Jay in a Larry David like fashion, pronounces that they had a nice time but should go their separate ways after the dinner instead of dragging the friendship on. It then turns out Gloria had actually invited the couple for a sleepover without Jay’s knowledge.

Gloria convinces the couple to stay by citing that Jay has grown old and senile and says things he doesn’t mean. A prank glass from Manny causes Jay to spill his orange juice on himself inadvertently selling the lie. Modern Family executive producers Dan O’Shannon and Bill Wrubel penned the episode, with Adam Shankman directing it.

The episode is simply a masterpiece and liable to make casuals and first time watchers, Modern Family fans for life. That’s why season 2, among other episodes but especially, undoubtedly this one, reigns king on the Modern Family hierarchy.
