6. Season 3

Season 3 of Modern Family saw standouts “Send Out the Clowns” (Episode 18) and “Election Day” (Episode 19) directly following it. Almost seems like magic for the series usually comes in twos. “Send Out the Clowns” directly examined Cam’s clowning past and his clowning partner Lewis after attending a funeral for their clowning mentor. Lewis convinces Cam to do one more clown act like old times thinking its the start of something bigger. However, Mitchell’s unhappiness with the situation eventually leads Cam to tell Lewis this is just a one time thing making Lewis one furious clown at being left again.

Meanwhile, Claire can’t get her daughters to accept her friend request on Facebook, the two lie that they didn’t decline leading Claire to send another request. Manny gets a new unlikely cool friend who’s over to secretly look at Gloria, when Manny is informed of the friendship being non-genuine, he’s okay with it. Apparently, he like’s the friend’s sister and now feels less guilt about being his friend for that reason. Phil and Luke decide to play dirty to get by realtor competitor Mitzi Roth not playing by the rules and stealing his clients.

“Election Day” actually looks into the time before Gloria, as Jay runs away from voting for his daughter Claire when he sees the first woman he slept with post-divorce, Dottie. Apparently it did not go well, eventually Jay returns to cast his ballot when he thinks the coast is clear, only to have the vote indeed not be counted by his former date.

There’s fun to be had in “Phil on Wire” (Episode 3) when Gloria grows ever jealous and annoyed at his Jay’s growing connection to his do Stella. Season 3 continued the Modern Family formula on the right path and it’s no wonder the early seasons of Modern Family are always in syndication. They’re simply endlessly re-watchable. One could watch ten episodes in a row and not feel time pass at all.
