2019 NFL Mock Draft: Broncos land Justin Herbert
By Brad Weiss
The New York Giants decided to pass on a franchise quarterback with their first round pick in 2018, opting instead to draft elite Penn State running back Saquon Barkley second overall. The thought process was that Eli Manning had a bunch of good years left in him, and after bolstering the offensive line by bringing in Nate Solder, they could make a run at a third ring with Manning under center.
However, while Barkley is an incredible talent, you never are supposed to draft a running back that high, no matter how good he is. The fact that they passed on a guy like Sam Darnold could end up being a franchise killer for the Giants, and it makes it even worse that he is currently playing for the New York Jets inside the same building.
The issue with the Giants is not talent at the skill positions, but rather the fact that Manning has no time to get them the ball. Despite the fact that they brought in Solder, and drafted Will Hernandez, this offensive line is still terrible, as the right tackle position has become a revolving door for the G-Men in recent years.
With their first round pick, which will likely be early in the first round again, the Giants should add an offensive tackle, and David Edwards from Wisconsin as a very good player. Edwards has been one of the best offensive lineman in the Big Ten for his entire career with the Badgers, and having Solder and him as bookends would give the Giants a solid tandem for next season, and beyond.
