Fantasy football 2018: top 10 waiver wire Week 5 pickups
RB: Mike Davis, Seattle Seahawks
Mike Davis came into the NFL as a fourth-round pick in 2015, debuting for the San Francisco 49ers after a quietly excellent collegiate career at South Carolina. He seemed to have all the tools to possibly become a well-rounded feature back in a few years, but that never materialized in San Francisco.
Last year, Davis joined the Seahawks and struggled to a meager 3.5 yards per carry, once again proving to be inefficient on the ground. He couldn’t solve the Seahawks constant woes at the running back position, despite averaging 40 yards per game.
Davis’s first taste of significant playing time came in 2017 with the Seahawks, but his first taste of real NFL success came in Week 4 of the 2018 season. The 25-year-old stomped all over the rival Arizona Cardinals, scoring two rushing touchdowns with a total of 101 yards on 23 carries. Furthermore, Davis showed some surprising value in the passing game with four receptions, even if those catches didn’t translate into many yards for the Seahawks offense.
Seattle’s starting running back Chris Carson is expected to play in Week 5, but he won’t be 100% and might not have the most firm grip on the starting job if Davis can have a follow-up performance.
That said, the Arizona running defense is notoriously dreadful this year, so Davis likely just took full advantage of one of the NFL’s softest matchups. Carson has showed promise this year and seems to be someone the Seahawks are high on.
Davis is owned in very few leagues, and he’s worth grabbing with Carson’s Week 5 status less-than-certain. The possibility for Davis to break out is there, even if it isn’t necessarily a high one.
