Group of 5 power rankings: Appalachian State moving up fast
By Daniel Stave
2. Boise State Broncos (MWC) 3-1
The Broncos had to wait two weeks to get back on the field after their big loss to Oklahoma State. They had little problem handling Wyoming in their Mountain West Conference opener. Boise State held a 24-0 lead at halftime.
The whole team put together an impressive effort. Five Bronco defenders took down Wyoming quarterback Tyler Vander Waal for sacks. Quarterback Brett Rypien threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver A.J. Richardson had six catches for 113 yards and a score.
Up next: Saturday vs. San Diego State.
1. Central Florida Knights (AAC) 4-0
The Knights continue to roll through their schedule, defeating Pitt 45-14 in Week 5. The closest game they’ve played in 2018 was a 20-point victory over FAU in Week 4. They haven’t lost since December 2016.
The key for UCF was once again McKenzie Milton. The quarterback accounted for all six Knight touchdowns, throwing for four and running for two. Milton also was responsible for 379 of the Knights’ 568 yards, which dwarfed the Panthers total of 272.
It will be interesting to see if anyone in the AAC can slow Central Florida down as they enter the bulk of conference play. Their toughest challenges will likely come in their last two games against Cincinnati and South Florida.
Up next: Saturday vs. SMU.
