Loser: Auburn Tigers (No. 8 down to No. 21)

Losing to LSU just a couple of weeks earlier, Auburn had to find a way to win at Mississippi State to keep its SEC title hopes alive.

The Tigers traveled to Starkville to face a Mississippi State team that was coming off a tough loss to Florida at home. It seemed to be a crushing loss for the Bulldogs which dropped them from the AP Top 25, but they got another crack at getting back in with a big win over No. 8 Auburn.

Mississippi State looked like the top-10 team on Saturday night as the Bulldogs were able to pull off the comfortable upset of the Tigers, 23-9.

Jarrett Stidham lost the quarterback battle and looked pedestrian, at best, completing 19-of-38 passes for 214 yards and no touchdowns but the Auburn defense had the toughest game, failing to slow Nick Fitzgerald on the ground. He was able to record nearly 200 rushing yards.

Auburn’s SEC title hopes may be gone now, but the Tigers’ College Football Playoff aspirations are almost surely shot.
