College football rankings: AP Top 25 predictions – Big shake-up in Top 10
The Red River Showdown had everyone’s attention on Saturday afternoon, but the seven-point favorite Sooners weren’t able to hold off the suddenly red-hot Texas Longhorns. Oklahoma mounted a late comeback after falling behind 45-24 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Longhorns’ field goal with under 10 seconds left was the difference as Kyler Murray suffered his first loss as the 2018 starter. His Heisman hopes remain alive, though.
One of those surprise teams in the SEC this season will drop after a Week 6 road loss against No. 22 Florida. The Tigers weren’t expected to make much noise this season, but they have two wins over ranked teams and they looked to make it three on Saturday, but the Gators proved to be just too much. Joe Burrow threw his first two picks as LSU’s quarterback while Dan Mullen added a signature win. The Tigers will still be in the hunt for the conference title despite the loss.
Washington raced out to a 24-7 lead over UCLA in the first half and it looked like this would become a blowout like everyone expected. Then the Huskies took their foot off the gas pedal, allowing the Bruins to get back within one score in the second half before Myles Gaskin sealed the deal with a late touchdown. The Huskies must remain focused for 60 minutes each week if they’re going to avoid slip-ups on their way to the Pac-12 title game.
Is Texas back? People are asking this each and every week and since their season-opening loss to Maryland, the Longhorns have won five straight games. Following victories over USC and TCU, the Longhorns mounted a 21-point lead over rival Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown before allowing the Sooners to tie it up late. Texas hit a field goal to win the game in the final 10 seconds, giving this rivalry even more future intrigue. Texas may just be back.
West Virginia probably didn’t expect the kind of fight it got from Kansas in a homecoming matchup in Morgantown, but the Mountaineers hung tough and put the Jayhawks away. Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers may be the biggest challengers to Texas and Oklahoma atop the conference standings and they just keep winning — and Will Grier continues to impress.
