3. Sign Patrick Corbin

The talented left-hander has made no secret of his interest in pitching for the Yankees. The New York native may be the team’s top free agent target this offseason.

The 29-year-old left-hander picked a great time to have the best season of his career. He was electric for the Diamondbacks in 2018. His 3.15 ERA in 33 starts shows he’s capable of being the ace of Boone’s staff. Some team is absolutely going to pay Corbin to be their ace this offseason.

If that team isn’t the Yankees it will represent a major failure by the organization. No one should expect Corbin to take a discount to come home to New York, but that could easily serve as the tiebreaker in the race for his signature.

The reality here is that the team will likely be required to overpay Corbin in terms of years. He’s going to be looking for a five-year deal that will take him into his mid-30s. It’s something the Yankees are going to have to accept. Corbin can provide great value early in his deal, but will be overpaid late. That’s the price of acquiring a legitimate ace in free agency.
