3. Patrick Corbin

We mentioned in the open that the Yankees will have a fair amount of money to spend this offseason. Expect a chunk of it to go to Patrick Corbin. The New York native has a strong interest in returning home to pitch for the Yankees and the team should do everything they can to make his dream a reality.

Corbin was one of the best pitchers in the National League for Arizona in 2018. He gave the Diamondbacks 200 innings with an ERA of 3.15. That was good enough to earn him a WAR of 4.8 on the season.

If he can replicate those numbers next year for the Yankees, he’ll be the ace of the staff. We’re projecting him as the No. 3 starter because last season was the best season of his career. That, combined with the projected adjustment of pitching in the Bronx should cause his ERA to balloon just a little.

The real key for Corbin will be to make sure he’s comfortable by the time the postseason arrives. The Yankees are in desperate need of another ace who can shut down elite offenses. When he’s on, Corbin has the ability to do just that. In many ways, he’s the teams most important free agent target of the offseason.
