6. Cincinnati Bearcats (6-1) AAC

The Bearcats fall from the ranks of the unbeaten, and fall a few spots in the rankings. Cincinnati had a tough match-up in Week 8, on the road against a solid Temple team. Charles McClelland gave the Bearcats a 17-10 lead in the middle of the third quarter when he broke off a 42-yard touchdown run. Cincinnati looked like they would escape victorious after Temple threw two fourth-quarter interceptions, one on a 3rd-and-goal after a 79-yard drive.

But credit the Owls’ persistence. The came back and scored the tying touchdown with only 49 seconds left. Temple scored again to open overtime. After Michael Warren II ran for an 11-yard first down on the Bearcats’ first play in the extra period, a fumble and a penalty made it 3rd-and-36 at the 40-yard line. Desmond Ridder then threw an interception to seal Cincinnati’s first loss.

Up next: Saturday at SMU.

5. Utah State Aggies (6-1) MWC

The Utah State offense didn’t do much last Saturday in a 24-16 win at Wyoming, but they didn’t have to. Darwin Thompson had a 56-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead. That single play was longer than any other drive Utah State had the rest of the night. Part of the reason was the defense and special teams did more than their fair share. USU safety Jontrell Rocquemore intercepted a Tyler Vander Waal pass on the first play of the second half and returned it to the Wyoming 3-yard line. Thompson found the end zone on the next play. Later in the third quarter, after a Wyoming field goal, Savon Scarver took the kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown. That gave the Aggies a 24-6 lead they were able to hold on to.

Up next: Saturday vs. New Mexico.
