Buccaneers trade Brent Grimes and Noah Spence to Steelers

Things have gone upside down quickly for Tampa Bay. They’re just not a complete team, but do have the chance to sell off some extra pieces without blowing up the roster. Cornerback Brent Grimes has a little value to contenders, and former second-round pick Noah Spence is a reclamation project needing a new home.

Grimes has dealt with injuries, but can give the Pittsburgh Steelers another playable boundary corner. The bar is low for the Steelers, as even their best corner, Joe Haden, is average to below-average. Grimes is average at this point, prone to deep balls like Haden, but at least brings more ball skills and reliability than Artie Burns and Coty Sensabaugh.

I thought Spence would be a much bigger force, but injuries have robbed him of some explosiveness and developmental time. He’s been a healthy scratch this year, which has been a massive drop-off for the pass-rusher. The Steelers would be buying low at a position of considerable need.

Le’Veon Bell’s holdout has opened enough space for the Steelers to acquire both players. If Bell comes back, this could be enough to give the team a needed jolt and more depth as the playoffs near.

Compensation is tough to pin, but something in the fourth-round range feels right. Grimes is a rental and Spence a lottery ticket, but the team should value them more than a Day 3 pick considering their window to win.
