Sunday marks the 10th game of the Premier League season for two teams in very different form. Contenders for a Champions League place Chelsea will take on mid-table Burnley at Turf Moor.
The hosts were one of the biggest surprises in all of soccer last season, grinding out hard-fought results on a weekly basis to ensure a seventh place finish. Because of how certain teams finished both in the league and in cup competition, seventh place was good enough for Burnley to earn a place in the Europa League this season. They’ve since been eliminated from that competition, but can still take pride in the fact that they managed to qualify for European competition for the first time in over half a century. They come into Sunday’s game following a thrashing by Manchester City last week, a game in which they allowed five goals. If they have any hope of winning this game, a stronger defensive effort will need to be a point of emphasis.
Chelsea come into Sunday’s game after a much-publicized and scrutinized draw with Manchester United last week. They haven’t been able to continue the torrid pace they began the season with, but they remain in third place, only two points shy of Manchester City and Liverpool. Chelsea still have high hopes for this season, one that could potentially end with an embarrassment of riches. The Blues have played well in the Europa League and are contenders for the Premier League crown as well. Standards are high at Chelsea, and winning one (or both) of those trophies would help first year manager Maurizio Sarri endear himself to the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Chelsea come into Sunday as favorites, especially given their form to start the season. Burnley remain one of the tougher teams in the Premier League to play, especially at home. This could turn out to be one of the better games of the weekend.
