3. Matt LaFleur

An extension of the Jay Gruden-Kyle Shanahan-Sean McVay coaching tree, LaFleur is in his first season as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans after serving in the same role under McVay with the Rams in 2017.

The Titans have not had an explosive offense thus far, as they sit 30th in total yards (280.9 per game), 30th in pass offense, 18th in rushing offense and 30th in scoring (15.1 points per game). But some key injuries have played a role, and LaFleur’s stock as a head coaching candidate should not be greatly diminished.

LaFleur has moved  pretty quickly up the coaching ladder, and this is his first year as a play caller. h He may benefit from more time in that primary role running the offense in Tennessee, surely with some autonomy from defensive-minded head coach Mike Vrabel, but he interviewed for the Titans job after last year and will get some looks again after this season.

As mentioned, the Browns can sell head coaching candidates on a promising future. Finding a young, offensive-minded head coach has to be a priority with Mayfield in place, and LaFleur checks those boxes.
